A gift from Chiang Mai
Thursday, September 18, 2014

I have recently been making a lot of cushions using vintage Hmong hill tribe embroidered babycarriers. When they arrive from Thailand I have to remove the backing to be able to restore them and sometimes I find that there is a little extra gift inside. I guess they have special significance. This one seemed to have parts from a wedding dress which the mother had hidden inside the new garment to bring luck to her baby. I like to think that this luck will pass on to the textile's new home, or in this case, our sofa - no way I can sell it!
